For an authentic taste, visit local markets such as La Placita de Santurce in San Juan. Here, vendors sell freshly made alcapurrias (fried stuffed fritters) and bacalaítos (salted codfish fritters). These snacks are perfect for sampling on the go and give insight into everyday Puerto Rican eating habits. A popular local restaurant on the island where we had a wonderful lunch. You know it's a great place to eat when there is a line outside and on the other side - you see the beach!

Ponce is known for its seafood dishes, thanks to its coastal location. Try asopao de mariscos, a rich seafood stew that warms the soul.

Utuado, in the mountainous interior, features hearty dishes like guineítos en escabeche, green bananas pickled in vinegar and spices.

Puerto Rico hosts several food festivals throughout the year. The Saborea Puerto Rico festival in San Juan celebrates local cuisine with tastings, cooking demonstrations, and competitions. Attending such events allows visitors to meet chefs and learn about the island’s food culture firsthand.
Culinary tours offer guided experiences through markets, farms, and restaurants. These tours often include hands-on cooking classes where travelers can learn to prepare dishes like arroz con gandules (rice with pigeon peas) or tembleque (coconut pudding).
In the photos is a most special afternoon I spent at Frutos Del Guacabo, An Agricultura Culinaria. At Frutos del Guacabo, culinary agriculture is promoted through “Farm to Table” experiences. Chefs, waiters, diners, and students exchange their knowledge and experiences to continue developing the gastronomy of the island. It was a most delightful and delicious afternoon!
