Chile is home to some of the most extraordinary encounters one can have in nature on the planet. Torres del Paine National Park, for instance, arguably offers the most dramatic mountain ranges on earth, creating striking natural amphitheatres and granite-enclosed valleys across the captivating landscape. The mountains pierce the sky at almost 10,000 feet and the area boasts abundant wildlife.
Visitors can experience one of the last true wild places while on a tour through Chile. Although Chile is often referred to as a land of contrasts, it would be more accurate to call it the land of extremes; while Arica basks in tropical heat at its tip, Punta Arenas shivers at its icy tall just short of Antarctica.
The variety of climate and eco-systems found across Chile offer a wide range of opportunities for active vacationers. There are 50 volcanoes, offering rare climbing opportunities. Visitors will be spoiled while running white-water rapids or paddling through fjords carved by ice. Adventure seekers can hike, bike, ski, surf, swim, horseback ride and even paraglide from deserts to ice fields; stargaze alongside top international observatories, experience the ancient mysteries of Rapa Nui (Easter Island) or be a part of the city life in Santiago or Valparaiso. Chile boasts numerous thermal facilities, from rustic pools to elegant five-star thermal resorts where visitors can soak in a hot spring, thanks to the large geographical faults and high geothermal activity, which explains the existence of such sources of thermal waters.
Visitors can also enjoy a less strenuous adventure, continuing their journey with a discovery of famous Chilean wines. The country boasts 11 wine routes that travel through picturesque villages, traditional wineries and breathtaking landscapes that will bring wine lovers closer to the traditions of rural Chile.
Chile has been designated with five UNESCO World Heritage sites since 1995 (Easter Island to Sewell in 2006). Known as the "city of stairs," Sewell, a former mining center flanked by the Andes mountains, was declared a World Heritage Site for its peculiar architecture. Salipetre Mines of Santa Laura and Humberstone also made the UNESCO list as well as 16 churches of Chiloe located in the most southern archipelago of Chile, as well as the historic center of the cosmopolitan city of Valparaiso.
